At long last, after almost two years of writing the I Have a Craving series, I am addressing what is arguably the most intense and oft-had craving of millions of people the world over, the desire for chocolate. Walt Disney World (WDW) chefs recognize that chocolate-loving patrons swoon over the typically sweet, creamy cacao confection. From those who simply know they like it to the discriminating epicure, WDW guests long to indulge their passion for chocolate, and can do so at numerous dining locations on property.  What follows are some of the most decadent ways to satisfy a chocolate craving at Walt Disney World:

Triple Chocolate - disneyMagic Kingdom Park

The Triple Chocolate Cupcake offered at Be Our Guest Restaurant is a small chocolate sponge cake filled with chocolate mousse, topped with chocolate ganache, and then garnished with a petite decorated chocolate.

Epcot

The Chocolate Wave served at Future World’s Coral Reef Restaurant is a single-serve chocolate cake that is dusted with confectioner’s sugar and served with raspberry gelato.  Once a “lava” cake, it is now prepared in a way that makes the cake incredibly moist as opposed to oozy.

Exclusively offered at the small funnel cake kiosk in the American Adventure Pavilion at World Showcase, the Double Chocolate Funnel Cake is a twist on the traditional funnel cake.  In this version, chocolate batter is deep fried then sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

Chocolate Strawberries - kfSponsored by Storck® USA, the makers of Werther’s® Original® Caramels, the Karamell-Küche in the Germany Pavilion is a shop that specializes in hand-crafted caramel treats.  Among its numerous offerings, patrons will discover several decadent candies including the Dark Chocolate Caramel with Sea Salt or the Caramel Chocolate Marshmallows.  There are also fruit dipped chocolate selections available such as Caramel & Chocolate Dipped Strawberries and Caramel & Chocolate Pineapple.  For those who enjoy pastries, the Salted Caramel Fudge Brownie or the German Chocolate Chip Cookie with Pecans are delicious options.

The La barre au chocolat served at Monsieur Paul in the France Pavilion is a layered dessert comprised of a rectangular shaped flourless chocolate cake, praline crunch, chocolate passion fruit ganache, chocolate mousse and a small scoop (quenelle) of ice cream.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The S’mores dessert at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe is a plated dessert version of the traditional s’mores treat you made as a kid. Here the well-known treat is an all grown up dish with a full graham cracker sheet base that is topped with a layer of rich chocolate, buried under eight perfectly toasted marshmallows and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

The Orbiting Oreos at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater technically is an alcoholic beverage, but its ingredients make it rich enough to serve as a meal-ending dessert.  The adults-only Oreo milkshake comes mixed with GODIVA® Chocolate Liqueur.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

The Sparkling Volcano at the Rainforest Café is one of the most fun ways to consume chocolate at WDW!  The erupting volcano-shaped brownie is filled with vanilla ice cream, oozing with caramel and chocolate lava sauce and topped with a puff of whipped cream resembling smoke.  A Mylar sparkler completes the explosive dessert.

Downtown Disney

The Ghirardelli® Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop at Downtown Disney is a chocolate lover’s wonderland.  There, the world-famous San Francisco-based chocolatier serves up chocolate in a variety of oh-so scrumptious ways such as The Gold Rush – Peanut Butter Hot Fudge Sundae, Chocolate Thick Shake, Chocolate Malt, Double Scoop Chocolate-Dipped Waffle Cone, Ghirardelli Chocolate Ice Cream, Ghirardelli Chocolate Brownie, Chocolate Filled Croissant, Lombard Street Hot Cocoa, Decadent Drinking Chocolate and all sorts of delectable chocolate candies.

WDW Resorts

banana torte - disneyThe Warm Chocolate-Banana Torte at Citricos in the Grand Floridian Resort is a small chocolate pastry topped with bananas and powdered sugar.  It is paired with vanilla ice cream and a fanciful Belgian chocolate crown.

The famous Zebra Domes available at Boma and The Mara in the Animal Kingdom Lodge, is a treat comprised of small mousse-filled, truffle-like sweets made with Amarula Cream Liqueur from Africa and coated with white chocolate and a dark chocolate drizzle.

The Chocolate Fondue at Kona Café in the Polynesian Resort is a luscious, melted chocolate sauce served with several options for dipping including strawberries, kiwi, pineapple and two types of house-made cookies.

The Chocolate Pudding Cake at California Grill in the Contemporary Resort is a delicious, flourless chocolate cake filled with yummy Nutella once baked.  The entire cake is covered with chocolate ganache, and then sprinkled lightly with coarse sea salt. It is perfectly plated amidst a swirl of Nutella, house-made chocolate meringue kisses and mini marshmallows, and then topped with a dollop (quenelle) of crème Chantilly (whipped cream). Kendall began visiting Walt Disney World in 1991 with her family and has continued to visit the resort with her husband.  As a child, she and her family filled vacations with challenges such as “How many times can we ride Splash Mountain during SpectroMagic and the fireworks?” (Answer: 7)  Now, after marrying a converted Disney skeptic, she and her husband enjoy challenges such as “How many hours can we eat nonstop at the Food & Wine Festival?” (Answer: 4)
